Get your head in the cloud with Microsoft OneDrive

One of my favorite movies is CAST AWAY, starring Tom Hanks. In the film, Hanks plays the role of a FedEx executive. After his jet crashes into the ocean, his character ends up on an island as the sole survivor.

However, this movie is a modernized version of the book Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. He too ended up on an island as the only survivor after his ship encountered a violent storm. He ended up calling it home for 27 years.

On the island he drew up a list that he categorized as BAD and GOOD. For example under ‘bad’ he wrote, “I am cast upon a horrible, desolate island, void of all hope of recovery.” Then under ‘good’ he wrote, “But I am alive; and not drowned…”

The reason I share this story with you is because I think we can all learn something from Crusoe’s example. In the previous blog I noted that Covid is severely testing our country right now. Many South Africans have lost loved ones, jobs, businesses etc.

However, while it is easy to despair and lose hope during this season of uncertainty and chaos, I believe that there are many things that we can still be thankful for. Why don’t you take some time today to draw up your own list? You may be surprised to learn, like Crusoe, that you have many blessings hiding in plain sight.

The intelligent files app for Microsoft 365

A few weeks ago, we kicked off a series called ‘Microsoft 365 for Dummies’ because we want to help people to understand the basics of Microsoft. We have already answered a few questions, but in this blog we’ll answer the specific question, “What is Microsoft OneDrive?”

OneDrive is the intelligent files app for Microsoft 365, which helps people to get their head in the clouds. In other words, it is a cloud-based service that enables you to store, protect, share, and access files from anywhere using an app or web-browser.

OneDrive is a cloud-based service that enables you to store, protect, share, and access files from anywhere using an app or web-browser.

By default, the folders and files in OneDrive remain private until a user shares them with others. You can sync the files and folders stored in Windows and Mac OS X with OneDrive, as well as collaborate on Microsoft Teams. Check out this YouTube video below for a concise overview.

Benefits of using OneDrive

Regardless of the subscription type most of the OneDrive features are available for big and small businesses. This enables them to easily collaborate, whether it’s a simple cloud-based file share for a small business or a highly utilized storage system for a larger enterprise. With OneDrive, you can:

  • Access files from all your devices
  • Share files inside or outside your business
  • Collaborate and co-author on the same documents
  • Quickly find files that matter most
  • Protect your files with enterprise-grade security

How to use OneDrive

If you run a small business, you may want to keep your OneDrive deployment simple by installing the sync app manually on your employees' computers and using the OneDrive admin center to manage a few settings for your users.

Alternatively, if you're running an enterprise, you may choose to deploy and manage OneDrive by using advanced tools like Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager and Group Policy. Check out this video for an overview on how to use the basics of OneDrive.
